Uruguay and Argentina are seeking to install a train line between the border cities of Salto and Concordia and to enhance connectivity. With this intention, the Vice Minister of Transport of Uruguay, Juan José Olaizola and the head of the State Railways Administration (AFE), José Pedro Pollak, visited the city of Buenos Aires to meet with leaders of the Argentine industry.
The Uruguayan Presidency explained in a statement that the meeting took place within the framework of an activity organized by the Latin American Railway Association. The Undersecretary of Railway Transport, Agustín Special, participated on behalf of Argentina.
“On the occasion, the Uruguayan authorities presented a draft of the project to agree on the execution of a train that makes the journey between both territories", stated the note released on Saturday (17.09.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX)
Some 400 people travel between Salto and Concordia every day, which would make the project viable, authorities said. To do so, Argentina must carry out a three-kilometer project and Uruguay is considering two possibilities: that the train reaches the center of the Salto capital or that a transfer to a bus be made at the Salto Grande dam and that the bus arrives at that city.
Thus, the initiative “It meets local needs and we consider it a symbol of integration between the two countries., an important milestone,” officials said.
Additionally, Progress was made in signing a railway agreement between both nations, so that Argentine trains can operate in Uruguay and national trains can do so in Argentina, via the Salto Grande dam route.
Finally, Pollak said that This type of transport is the only one that does not currently operate between neighboring countries., unlike land, sea and air transport, which have been present for many years.
