The International Maritime Organization (IMO) welcomed the peace agreement reached between the United States and Iran, after more than 100 days of conflict that disrupted global shipping and affected more than 20.000 sailors in the region, including those who remain on board ships with no possibility of leaving the area through the Strait of Hormuz.
In that context, andThe Secretary-General of the IMO, Arsenio Domínguez, He expressed his “great satisfaction” with the agreement on Monday (June 15, 2026) and stressed that it represents a “crucial return to peace, dialogue and diplomacy”, as well as a key step to restore security and freedom of navigation in one of the world's most strategic maritime corridors.
The agency also reported that the agreement will allow progress to be made on plans to evacuate thousands of crew members stranded in the area. However, it cautioned that the process will require time and coordination among the states, the maritime industry, and international organizations to ensure a safe departure.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the main routes of international trade and is strategic for the global transport of energy, through which a significant part of the global exports of oil and liquefied natural gas pass.
Finally, the IMO reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of seafarers, freedom of navigation and the continuity of global trade flows.
The announcement comes after months of tension in the region, a period during which various maritime organizations issued special safety recommendations regarding the risks faced by ships operating in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz.
