The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay has announced that the country continues the evaluation process for the implementation of the Customs Convention on the International Carriage of Goods under Cover of TIR Carnets (TIR Convention), an international instrument adopted in 1975 under the auspices of the United Nations.

Within this framework, a few days ago, an informational conference was held to present the advantages and opportunities represented by the incorporation and implementation of this mechanism, which simplifies the land transport of goods across international borders, reducing customs controls to a minimum.

The event featured the participation of the Vice Minister of Economic Relations and Integration, Patricia Frutos, and the keynote address was given by Lucas Lagier, senior executive of the International Road Transport Organization (IRU). During his presentation, Lagier explained the process of joining the Convention and highlighted the IRU's key role in facilitating international trade and transport, highlighting its work in developing global standards and logistics innovations.

The event brought together representatives of public institutions with expertise in international trade, logistics operators, exporters, importers, and other key players in the freight transport ecosystem.

At regional levelArgentina, Chile and Uruguay are already part of the TIR Convention, Meanwhile in Brazil is analyzing its possible ratificationFor Paraguay, this seminar represented a significant advance in raising awareness among the public and private sectors about the concrete benefits that implementing the TIR system could bring, including streamlining procedures, reducing logistics costs, and strengthening the competitiveness of foreign trade.

In this context, it is important to recall the strategic projection of the Bioceanic Road Corridor, an infrastructure project that will connect the Brazilian port of Porto Murtinho with the ports of northern Chile—such as Iquique and Antofagasta—crossing Paraguayan territory and the provinces of northwestern Argentina.
