The Embassy of Japan in Argentina announced this Tuesday (01.08.2023) that the ships “Kashima” and “Hatakaze” of the Maritime Self-Defense Force Training, will be in the port of Buenos Aires of August 5-8, as part of its 2023 overseas training trip.
The purpose of such trips is to provide officers with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for service in the squadron, the diplomatic representation explained in a statement.

This is a 149-day voyage, which includes approximately 52.400 km of navigation. After visiting Dutch Harbor (USA), Victoria (Canada), Manzanillo (Mexico), Callao (Peru), Valparaiso (Chile), the ships will be in Argentina to continue their journey through Rio de Janeiro and Recife (Brazil), Cartagena (Colombia), to finish again in the USA.
On their eleventh visit to Argentine territory, the ships will arrive for the first time crossing the Strait of Magellan, one of the most difficult navigation points of this induction trip, from the Pacific and in the winter season, being an extremely enriching experience for the entire squadron.
The squadron is led by the Rear Admiral Yasushige Konno, Commander of the Long Distance Training Flotilla which has a crew of 560 people, including about 160 midshipmen who have completed the 73rd general course for officer candidates. The ship “Kashima” is commanded by the Captain of the Navy, Miho Otani, and the ship “Hatakaze” by the Frigate Captain Hiroyuki Ikezaki.
During his stay, the Japanese Embassy organized a series of cultural activities in Buenos Aires, which will strengthen the friendly relations between Argentina and Japan, which this year celebrate 125 years.
