On Sunday (20.5.2018) Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and his Chilean counterpart, Roberto Ampuero, signed an agreement between the two countries for the Refurbishment of the Cristo Redentor System Pass.
According to the official statement, "The ministers agreed that the Cristo Redentor Pass is the connection with the highest level of traffic between Argentina and Chile and that its infrastructure shows an urgent need for modernization and expansion, and in this sense they agreed to proceed with its comprehensive refurbishment, which will allow increasing its capacity and safety conditions.".
Through this Agreement, both states undertake to initiate the project as soon as possible and to provide the necessary funds for its financing, also planning for external financing. The project will be carried out in two phases, between 2018 and 2022.
The Cristo Redentor Pass is 3,08 kilometers long and is the only paved connection that unites the cities of Mendoza and Valparaíso. In addition, it is the road with the highest level of heavy traffic that unites Argentina with Chile.
Foreign Minister Ampuero is participating in the G-20 Plenary of Ministers, which is taking place this Monday (21.5.2018) at the San Martín Palace, after Argentina, who holds the Presidency of the forum, invited Chile to participate in it this year.
