Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou expressed this Monday (18.07.20229) the importance of his country being able to advance "together" with the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China.
«The idea is to move forward together. Mercosur has much more negotiating power as a whole than Uruguay alone.", said the Head of State to the press, after concluding the ceremony celebrating the 192nd anniversary of the Oath of the Constitution.
Lacalle Pou made a series of points regarding his trade association initiative with the Asian country and clarified: "if Mercosur does not intend to move forward, Uruguay cannot remain still." At the same time, he stressed that his country must open the market and find more jobs for its population.
Last week, Lacalle Pou announced that Uruguay and China would begin negotiations to advance the implementation of the treaty, after completing the "joint" feasibility study that enables the start of such treatments.
This initiative for a free trade agreement with a country that is not a member of Mercosur, becomes current just a few days after this regional trade bloc (by its conception, customs union/common external tariff and common foreign policy) celebrate – on July 21 – its semi-annual summit in Asunción, where Paraguay will hand over the Pro Tempore Presidency to Uruguay.
