Peru surpasses Chile in copper exports to China

-

Peru has become the largest exporter of copper concentrates to China, the main consumer of the red metal, for the first time, surpassing Chile.

This is shown by the figures collected by Bloomberg from customs in that country, which show that as of August 2017 the Asian giant received 3,22 million tons of concentrates from Peru, while 2,72 million arrived from Chile.

Although in 2016 shipments of Peruvian concentrates to China were close to matching those of Chile, analysts expect that 2017 will close with a consolidation of the neighboring country.

The reasons cited by the agency include the long stoppage faced by the Escondida mine (Antofagasta Region), the largest copper mine in the world, at the beginning of the year, which lasted 44 days.

China uses the mineral is used in everything from computer chips, digital currencies or bitcoins, plumbing pipes, among others.
