World Maritime Day is celebrated on September 28 to help foster new jobs, increased prosperity and stability in communities. Inter-agency cooperation helps to effectively protect the marine environment and improve the safety and security of maritime transport.
En In 1948, a convention was adopted that officially formed the International Maritime Organization. (IMO) under the name of the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO). The IMO Convention entered into force in 1958, and since then the IMO has demonstrated that the development, adoption, implementation and application of international standards on a global scale is the only effective way to regulate maritime transport.
The International Maritime Organization
It is the world authority responsible for setting standards for safety, security and environmental performance to be observed in international maritime transport. Its main function is to create a level playing field so that ship owners have a variety of ways to solve their financial problems that do not compromise safety, security and environmental performance.
On World Day IMO seeks to promote, foster and develop maritime transport in the near future, through techniques such as improving energy efficiency with new technologies, improving safety and maritime traffic management, and developing infrastructure.
As to sustainable development, good maritime transport management has a positive impact on the environment, reducing harmful effects on the environment, as it could be considered the “least harmful” transport. Since the beginning of the Organization, measures have been taken to prevent and reduce pollution from ships and actions arising from maritime trade. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) is the IMO's highest technical body on matters relating to marine pollution.
The motto for 2017 is “Connecting ships, ports and people” aims to provide an opportunity to work with developed and developing countries, the maritime industry, and public and private ports to identify and promote best practices and improve relationships between stakeholders. In particular, it targets individuals and entities in the shipping and logistics areas.
