IMO on World Maritime Day highlights protection of the marine environment

IMO's commitment to marine environment conservation is highlighted today (28.09.2023) at the World Maritime Day.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention)., the principal global treaty for the prevention of pollution of the marine environment from ships, whether intentional, operational or accidental.

To commemorate the IMO's dedication to the objectives of this historic treaty, the motto World Maritime Day 2023 is “50 years of MARPOL: Our commitment continues«. IMO calls on Member States and the entire maritime sector to celebrate this day and draw inspiration from the positive impact that the MARPOL Convention has had. IMO's work towards a sustainable future with greater protection for our planet and our oceans continues.

In his message on the 2023 world maritime theme, the IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, He highlighted the achievements already made in regulation to protect ocean health, but made clear that the shipping sector still has important work ahead:

«Maritime transport must adopt the decarbonization, digitalization and innovative technology, including automation, while ensuring that the technological and ecological transition remains human-centred to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations. MARPOL has helped to make a difference for shipping – and for the health of our oceans – and will continue to do so for the next 50 years,” he said. Kitack Lim.

Additionally, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, called for "put all the meanss» to achieve a fair and equitable transition towards a greener and decarbonised maritime transport sector.

“In the decades since, MARPOL has made a significant contribution to protecting our planet and oceans, making shipping safer and cleaner today. World Maritime Day was celebrated for the first time on 28 September 1978, marking the twentieth anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention establishing the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In this sense, the aim is to promote safe and sustainable maritime development, contributing to development and the fight against pollution.
