Mexico hopes to return to free trade in cars with Brazil

Mexico hopes to return to free trade in automobiles with Brazil once a quota scheme ends next March, said the Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the Mexican Ministry of Economy, Luz María de la Mora.

Prior to the start of the 36th Annual Ordinary Assembly of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), the Mexican official explained to journalists that "we are just in talks, seeing what we can do."

He said that "it is true that there are some issues regarding rules of origin that need to be defined, but we do not see it as complicated."

At Brazil's request, quotas were imposed on imports of cars and parts manufactured in Mexico, due to alleged effects on the Brazilian industry due to high levels of trade.

The quotas will expire on March 19, based on Economic Complementation Agreement No. 55, which was signed in 2015, the Mexican government official recalled.

"We are asking the Brazilian government to comply with what the agreement says, it is a commitment since 2015," he said.

He said: "We did not sit down at the table to negotiate, we only exchanged some points of view."

On February 11, the president of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry, Eduardo Solís, reported that he has held meetings with the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to promote the return to the free exchange of automotive goods with Brazil.

Mexico is the world's seventh largest producer of light and heavy vehicles.
