Chancay Port Terminal prepares to accelerate Peru's exports to Asia

-

The new port of Chancay, in the north of Lima (Peru), is finishing the last details to be inaugurated on next November 14, with the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Peruvian counterpart, Dina Boluarte.

For this purpose, the Peruvian Government supervised this Tuesday (29.10.2024) the progress of the works in the port of Chancay, located 80 kilometers north of Lima. The construction is in charge of Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru, one of the largest shipping companies in China, whose majority shareholder is the Chinese State. The Peruvian company Inversiones Portuarias Chancay holds the remaining 40% of the project.

In a statement to the press, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Desilú León, highlighted that the launch of the Multipurpose Port Terminal (TPM) of Chancay will allow Peruvian products to reach our main trading partners in Asia in less time, taking advantage of the tariff preferences of the country's extensive network of trade agreements.

During a working visit to the Port of Chancay, the head of Mincetur supervised the progress of the works of this project, which will transform national port logistics and consolidate Peru's position as regional hub. With private investment, the project will allow the port to receive large vessels with a cargo capacity, projecting an economic impact of more than USD 4,500 billion annually and generating more than 1,200 direct jobs. It is estimated that the Port of Chancay will handle between 30% and 40% of the national cargo destined for China and Southeast Asia in its first years of operation.

"The entry into operation of the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal will significantly reduce shipping times to Asia, directly benefiting our export offering, especially in the agricultural sector. At Mincetur, we project that this port will handle 22% of total agricultural exports in the medium term," said Peruvian Minister Desilú León.
