Authorities from the countries of the Northern Triangle of Central America, formed by El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, will inspect three of the six Salvadoran borders with the objective of "identifying the needs" of the posts and equipping them to guarantee their operation.
Customs, immigration and security officials from the three countries will visit the border posts of El Poy (north), which borders Honduras, and Anguiatú (west) and La Hachadura (southwest) between March 6 and 8., both bordering Guatemala, according to the Salvadoran Ministry of Economy (Minec),
Inspections are part of the Customs Union process, which involves identifying problems or needs in terms of infrastructure, furniture and equipment in order to "solve them and ensure the operation of border posts."
The agreements to inspect these points were established during the II Round of Customs Union of the Northern Triangle that took place from February 11 to 15 in San Salvador., which was attended by members of the technical committees and the trade policy directors of the three nations.
The third meeting, which will review the agreements reached in San Salvador, will take place between March 11 and 15 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the source added.
In August 2018, El Salvador officially joined the Customs Union in a ceremony held at the El Corinto border post in Honduras.
On June 26, 2017, Guatemala and Honduras, countries with a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of $72.781 billion, equivalent to 46 percent of the GDP of the entire region, finalized the alliance they negotiated for two years.
"Potential effects" on GDP and exports
This agreement will have "potential effects," according to a study by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which predicts an increase of between 0,5 and 1,2 percent in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the three nations, currently at 126.933 billion dollars.
Exports are also expected to increase by between 1,4 and 3,6 percent, and employment by between 0,6 and 1,5 percent.
