What will be the impacts for Argentina of an agreement between Mercosur and the European Union?

-

Argentina and the European Union (EU) celebrated a historic breakthrough with the signing of the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the EU, a milestone that promises to transform trade relations and strengthen economic ties between both parties. This agreement, which was in negotiations for more than 20 years, is presented as a key platform to expand trade opportunities and increase Argentina's competitiveness in European markets.

In order to deepen the analysis, we will consider the goods that are most traded between Argentina and the European Union.

Argentine exports to the European Union

Argentina has managed to establish a solid trade relationship with the EU, with the European bloc being one of its main partners. Currently, Argentine exports to the EU represent approximately 10,24% of its global sales, a significant figure in the country's foreign trade. Among the most notable products that Argentina exports to the EU are soybean flour, peanuts and chilled beef.

La Soy flour is the main export product to the EU, with a value of 628 million dollars. This product, of great importance for the European feed and oil industry, has seen sustained growth in demand. Cordoban peanuts, with 578 million dollars, is another of the outstanding products in Argentine exports, due to the excellent quality that Argentina offers to the European market. Finally, the chilled beef, worth 458 million dollars, also plays a key role in the trade relationship with the EU, especially in countries with high demand for quality meat products.

This set of exports not only highlights Argentina's relevance as a supplier of high-quality food, but also demonstrates the growing interdependence between the two blocs in strategic sectors.

Argentine imports from the European Union

On the other hand, the trade relationship also involves significant imports from the EU to Argentina. In 2023, Argentine imports from the EU amounted to 10.701 billion dollars, which represents 14,5% of the country's total imports. Among the most significant products that Argentina imports from Europe, the following stand out: petroleum oil ($929 million), the vehicle parts (737 billion dollars) and drugs (US$726 million). These products are essential for various Argentine industries, such as the automotive, pharmaceutical and energy industries.

Impact of the Mercosur-EU agreement

The free trade agreement between Mercosur and the EU is an opportunity to triple the current amounts and percentages of exports and imports between Argentina and the EU. The elimination of tariffs, improved market access and the reduction of trade barriers will facilitate the flow of goods and services, especially in sectors where Argentina has a competitive advantage, such as agribusiness and food production.

With the agreement, Argentine exports to the EU are expected to increase significantly, opening up new opportunities for products such as beef, wine, citrus fruits, soybean oil, and dairy products. In addition, market integration will strengthen Argentine small and medium-sized businesses, improving their export capacity to the European bloc.

In terms of imports, Argentina will be able to benefit from easier and cheaper access to high-tech products, machinery, and industrial products from the EU, which could boost its development in key sectors such as the automotive, pharmaceutical and infrastructure industries.

Like any economic integration agreement, there are sectors with positive and negative impacts, and there are areas where competitiveness must be improved to avoid market losses and employment difficulties.

Future prospects

The process for the final approval of the agreement in the parliaments of both the Mercosur countries and the European Parliament will be a difficult and difficult road, where France will play a key role - as an opposition - and will seek allies to prevent the approval of the agreement.

With the ratification of the Mercosur-EU agreement, trade relations between Argentina and the European Union are expected to continue growing exponentially. Mercosur is a closed bloc with high taxes and trade agreements with low global impact, and this would change the trend.

In short, the agreement with the EU represents a fundamental step for Argentina, not only in terms of increasing its exports and imports, but also in consolidating itself as a key player in global trade.

It would increase the interest to invest in our country, adding to the incipient economic stability, considering that the next few years will be crucial to take advantage of the opportunities offered by this agreement, with the potential to triple the export volume and trade amounts between both parties, improving the economic prospects for Argentina and the region.
