Since 2006, Uruguay has begun a dynamic process towards the modernization of its Customs. The country has decided to position itself as a logistics hub in the region, which makes it necessary to incorporate modern customs guidelines.

Ten years after this strategic step, a team of professionals from the National Customs Directorate (DNA) headed by Enrique Canon, comments to Customs News Customs innovation projects. They talk about reducing control for greater efficiency; cross-border interoperability, baggage regime, e-commerce, and how a large structure extends its culture online.

There is broad consensus on the high level of innovation and technology at AFIP. It is a sophisticated center with special analytical capacity. It operates 24 x 7 processing information on taxpayers, tax collection, tax returns, registrations and foreign trade.

While I stir the coffee, Jaime González Pradenas sits back with the pride of belonging to an organisation that is more than a hundred years old. As Deputy Director of Information Technology (TYP), he is aware of how important Customs is for his country. Promoting innovation and technology (IT) in the organisation is much more a cultural issue than an economic one. A social responsibility that he is committed to.

Our Argentina needs a moment of reflection, of introspection, and also of emotion and sensitivity. It needs a change for a better life. But a year does not improve just like that. It is not about talking, it is about doing. We need less desires and more actions.
