Argentina and Chile strengthen ties with a broad agenda

During the meeting this Monday (06.04.2026) in the Casa RosadaThe Presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei, and Chile, José Antonio Kast, noted the high level of agreement between both governments and agreed to promote a cooperation agenda in various fields, according to the Foreign Ministers.

The official text indicates that both countries agreed to strengthen the bilateral trade and attracting investment, promoting energy and mining integration, and developing joint training, innovation, and technology transfer programs. These initiatives are framed within existing agreements such as Economic Complementation Agreement No. 35 between MERCOSUR and Chile (ACE 35) —in force since October 1996—, the bilateral Trade Agreement and the Treaty of Integration and Mining Complementarity between Chile and Argentina.

Since its entry into force, ACE 35 has been updated through 69 Additional Protocols, which incorporate chapters on various disciplines and must be incorporated into the domestic legal framework of each signatory country. In particular, Additional Protocol No. 69, corresponding to Annex 13 of the Agreement, which regulates the “Rules of Origin,” entered into force in Argentina on September 30, 2025. These instruments represent significant progress in strengthening bilateral economic ties and deepening relations with the countries of the Pacific Alliance.

In terms of public securityThe importance of exchanging information and best practices, and of strengthening capacities to combat transnational organized crime and related offenses, was highlighted. Furthermore, the Chilean Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude for "the efforts made and the support provided by Argentina in the extradition process of Chilean citizen Galvarino Apablaza."

The Foreign Ministers also stressed the need to modernize border crossings, Digitizing procedures and optimizing border controls aims to facilitate the transit of tourists and goods, reduce logistics costs, and enhance regional connectivity. Cooperation in Antarctica was also reaffirmed.

To follow up on these agreements, it was agreed to "convene the main bilateral coordination mechanisms as soon as possible," including the 2 plus 2 mechanism, COMPERSEG, the Binational Commission for Trade and Investment, the Administrative Commission of the Trade Agreement, the Binational Antarctic Commission and Joint Commission on illicit drug trafficking.
