Costa Rica will host the 7th Meeting of the Latin American Anti-Smuggling Alliance on Tuesday, May 8 and Wednesday, May 2019, XNUMX, which seeks to strengthen commercial legality and combat this fraud.
The Latin American Anti-Smuggling Alliance (ALAC) is made up of companies, chambers and governments from 15 countries in the region.
Smuggling accounts for around 2% of Latin America's GDP, or around US$150.000 billion annually, affecting industries such as steel, metalworking and steel; tobacco, liquor, medicines and cosmetics; plastics and footwear; textiles and clothing; and cybersecurity.
In 2018, Brazil, the continent's largest economy, lost nearly $50.000 billion to the illegal market.
The main problem is cigarette smuggling, which accounts for 54% of the market in Brazil, 24% in Chile and 12% in Argentina.
Technical smuggling is the type that most affects the textile and clothing sector: under-invoicing, false declaration of origin, false classification.
Given this reality, the pro-tempore president of the Latin American Alliance against Smuggling (ALAC) said that the entity seeks to expand "Cooperation and integration between countries to combat organized crime, which uses smuggling resources for other illicit activities, clearly threatening public safety.«.
