Within the framework of an official visit, the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi, signed this Tuesday (22.07.2025) a central agreement for cooperation in matters of security and the fight against transnational crime, along with other bilateral agreements on gender equality, culture and consular cooperation.
The event took place at the Executive Tower in Montevideo, where both leaders highlighted the need to strengthen international coordination in security matters, facing growing challenges that transcend national borders.
"One of the agreements we've been seeking for a long time is cooperation on security and the fight against crime. It's the result of a long conversation between our teams and those of the Spanish government.”, He affirmed President Yamandú Orsi, highlighting the importance of this step in the institutional strengthening of the country.
From the Spanish perspective, Pedro Sánchez emphasized that this is a "priority agreement" for both states, alluding to the direct impact it will have on the protection of citizens:

The agreement includes exchange of information, technical assistance and training in criminal prevention and investigation, and is part of a broader agenda of collaboration between both countries.
In addition to the security agreement, other agreements were signed five agreements: Consular cooperation to strengthen assistance to citizens; an agreement between diplomatic schools on joint training; a gender equality agreement with a focus on equitable public policies; and a cultural cooperation agreement to promote artistic exchange. In addition, a technical understanding on vehicular traffic, which includes Uruguay's interest in adopting the Spanish Points-based Booklet system.
Both presidents highlighted the historical, cultural, and human ties that unite Uruguay and Spain, as well as the shared desire to continue expanding cooperation.This relationship will continue. It requires many encounters, both formal and informal, to continue discovering everything that unites us and everything we still have to build.", concluded Orsi.
