New technical regulation on energy efficiency for household appliances approved

The Secretariat of Industry and Commerce has approved a new Technical Regulation that establishes mandatory energy efficiency labeling for home appliances in Argentina. This regulation, which affects manufacturers and importers, will be applicable to all new products that consume energy or impact its use, becoming an essential requirement for their commercialization in the country.

La Resolution 438 / 2024, published today (26.11.2024), details once categories of products subject to this regulation: refrigerators, freezers and freezers; electric washing machines; air conditioners; microwave ovens; electric storage water heaters; lamps; televisions; induction motors (single-phase and three-phase); dishwashers; electric ovens and electric pumps.

To ensure compliance with the requirements Labeling, manufacturers and importers They must submit a Affidavit of Compliance and perform the tests corresponding, in accordance with the specifications established in the regulations. In addition, they will be responsible for complying with the obligations required in the resolution.

This update is part of the World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations, which allow countries to implement measures to protect quality, health, the environment and safety. At the national level, Decree No. 274/2019 grants the former Secretariat of Domestic Trade the power to establish safety requirements for products, while Law No. 24.240/1993 on Consumer Protection requires suppliers to provide detailed information on product characteristics.

In line with these principles, the government promotes the efficient use of energy through PRONUREE (National Program for Rational and Efficient Use of Energy) and encourages innovation through technical regulations on energy efficiency. This initiative seeks to: unify procedures, reduce costs and facilitate access to “clear and precise” information on energy efficiency. Under this measure, the They repealed 13 previous regulations.

The resolution also grants the National Directorate of Technical Regulations the power to issue complementary and clarifying regulations to ensure the effectiveness and operability of the established provisions.

The measure will come into effect on November 27, 2024, one day after its publication in the Official Gazette.
