G20: Finance Ministers to meet next week in Buenos Aires

-

The first G19 ministerial meeting of 20 will take place on March 20 and 2018. Finance ministers and central bank presidents from member countries and invited international organizations will participate.

One of Argentina's responsibilities as president of the forum this year is to set the agenda for the meetings.

This first ministerial meeting will have two main themes. The first is related to the future of work. New technologies modify labour structures and generate opportunities and challenges. The aim will be to take advantage of the digital revolution to create new and better quality jobs. In addition, it will be addressed from a gender perspective: reducing the differences in employability that exist between men and women is also one of the objectives of this year.

The second axis of the ministerial meeting will focus on infrastructure for development. Demian Reidel, 2nd Vice President of the BCRA, stressed the importance of generating better financing mechanisms: “By 2035, US$ 5,5 trillion will be needed for infrastructure in the world. In that period, US$ 80 trillion will be available for investment. However, these realities are not communicated today and there is room to create better conditions.”

This second axis will also focus on tax issues in the digital economy, financial inclusion, international financial architecture, sustainable finance, global economy and even cryptocurrencies.

Nicolás Dujovne and Federico Sturzenegger will be the representatives of Argentina, while visiting the country will be Steven Mnuchin, Secretary of the Treasury of the United States; Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank; Christine Lagarde, Director of the IMF; Philip Hammond, Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom; Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank; and Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of China, among others.

The meeting will be held at the Buenos Aires Convention and Exhibition Centre (CEC). The second ministerial meeting of the Finance Channel will be held on April 20 in Washington. The third and final meeting will be held on July 21 and 22 in Buenos Aires. The major meeting of the G20 this year, the Leaders' Summit, will be held on November 30 and December 1 in Buenos Aires.
