Roaming charges: Mercosur is considering its elimination

At the closing ceremony of the Mercosur regional meeting held in Buenos Aires, the National Communications Agency (ENACOM) announced that it had proposed gradually eliminating charges for roaming services.

The president of ENACOM, Silvana Giudici, highlighted as one of the main points of the Mercosur agenda ““Joint work to progressively eliminate roaming charges in the Organization’s member countries, which will allow for better and more economical service to be provided to users.”

Giudici said this during the closing ceremony of the regional meeting that took place over two days at the San Martín Palace, given that the country holds the pro tempore presidency of Mercosur for six months. Therefore, ENACOM is the body in charge of coordinating meetings in the area of ​​communications.

Security, Digital Agenda and Postal Market

The official referred to the policies implemented, jointly with the Ministry of Security, to achieve the nomination of the prepaid telephone fleet through the implementation of the *234 line and the *910 line, which allows reporting theft and loss of mobile terminals.

The president of Enacom said that these policies “They have had remarkable success, allowing a 20% reduction in mobile phone theft"and invited member countries to share this experience at the regional level.

In addition, topics such as the implementation of a Mercosur digital agenda were discussed; adapting regulations in favour of a postal market as a driver of trade; agreeing on the different manuals for coordinating services in border areas; consolidating SGT 1 as an area for resolving cross-border interference; and consolidating common positions for the next World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC19) of the ITU and the Congress of the Universal Postal Union.
