Environment bans trade, circulation and breeding of the giant African snail

The Ministry of the Environment has published Resolution 417/2020 prohibiting the import, export, interjurisdictional transit, breeding and trade of the giant African snail. The reasons are based on considering it harmful and detrimental to the conservation of biodiversity, productive activities and human health.

La regulations, published today (19.11.2020) in the Official Gazette, is an extension of Regulatory Decree No. 666/97, which allows for urgent protection measures to be taken against the giant African snail, Achatina fulica. The ministerial text expressly prohibits the introduction into Argentina of live animals, products or by-products of this invasive species..

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified it as one of the 100 most harmful invasive alien organisms globally, thus causing severe impacts on biological diversity, the economy, public health and sociocultural values.

The regulations explain that the aforementioned caracol has been included as one of the Pilots of the Project Strengthening Governance for the Protection of Biodiversity Through the Formulation and Implementation of the National Strategy on Exotic Species Invasive species mentioned above, with the aim of evaluating their current distribution in Argentina and consequently, developing and promoting dissemination, prevention, control and/or eradication actions.

This Resolution shall enter into force immediately.
