Japan opens the market for beef and sheep meat from Argentine Patagonia

-

The national government announced that Japan has officially recognized Patagonian beef and sheep meat.

This is a historic step that reflects the dynamism in the relationship between the two countries, especially since the visit of President Mauricio Macri to Japan in May 2016, and the recent mission to that country by the Minister of Agroindustry, Luis Miguel Etchevehere, in May 2018, during which he held a meeting in Tokyo with the Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ken Saito.

Wagyu beef

The measure implies simultaneously opening Patagonian beef and sheep meat to the Japanese market, at the same time as the same thing happens for Japanese Wagyu Beef in the Argentine market.

In this regard, Minister Etchevehere expressed his "satisfaction for having managed to take this important step for our countries as a result of effective and coordinated work by health agencies, the Ministries of Agriculture and the Embassies of both parties, which strengthens mutual trust to continue working on other levels." He also highlighted the work of the Secretariat of Agroindustrial Markets and the National Service of Health and Agrifood Quality, which made this opening possible.

The result of this negotiation reinforces the importance of advance in the opening of other Argentine products to the Japanese market, prioritizing beef from the rest of the country and also fruits (blueberries, cherries, grapes, among other products), as well as strengthening the trade flows already existing between Argentina and Japan (honey and wines, among others).

Complementarity

In this regard, Etchevehere also highlighted that "the complementarity that exists between the economies and productive structures "both countries allow us to carry out an intense strategic agenda, not only in commercial matters, but also in investments and technical cooperation."
