The Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT) of Guatemala has reported this Monday, (07.10.2024) that the Customs Superintendent, Edwin Curtidor Juarez received a visit from the Office of International Affairs of Customs and Border Protection of the United States (CBP, in its acronym in English) James Collins to follow up on the Trade Facilitation Task Force (TFTF).

It is important to note that the Government of Guatemala established the Trade Facilitation Task Force in April 2024This “elite unit” is based on inter-institutional collaboration between the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, in addition to the SAT, which leads the process.

During the visit, plans for the expansion of the Task Force were discussed, which include the Customs of Saint Thomas of Castile, located in one of the most important seaports in Guatemala, as well as other key customs, such as the one in Air Express and central aviation at La Aurora International Airport.

The constant support of CBP in the training and technical assistance for FTFC staff.

Another topic discussed during the meeting was the work of the Regional Intelligence Liaison Office (RILO) of Central America.

The visit included a tour of the Integrated Technology Monitoring Center, where plans to implement advanced control and security technologies with a focus on artificial intelligence and data analytics were discussed.

In this regard, Commissioner Collins reaffirmed CBP's commitment to continue strengthening collaboration with the Customs Office by promoting capacity building at the Inter-Institutional Control Posts. For his part, the SAT superintendent noted that the joint efforts led by that entity continue to allow for efficient border control and management, which is driven by the use of technology to detect various scourges that affect legal trade.
