The San Ysidro border crossing between San Diego and Tijuana closed this weekend to the more than 40,000 vehicles that pass through each day to reach Mexico.
The border crossing closed on Saturday (23.09.2017) and will reopen on Monday for work on a $741 million expansion project.
It is believed to be the Major renovation of a 3,200-kilometer border crossing in order to relieve congestion and promote trade.
The closure is expected to cause massive traffic jams and affect businesses, workers and tourists. Business organizations and authorities expect an economic impact, as well as traffic problems that could become chaotic, since there will also be detours on streets in San Ysidro.
During the 57 hours of closure It is planned to realign a section of Highway 5 to connect it with the Mexican customs facilities. known as El Chaparral.
The impact of the work will not only be during these three days of closure, but for the next 18 months., since there will be a reduction in southbound lanes, according to those in charge of the project.
The work is part of the third and final phase of the remodeling and expansion of this border crossing, which the federal government has been carrying out since April 2011 and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2019.
The weekend closure is to remove a large metal sheet covering the southbound lanes into Mexico.
Travelers endure hours-long waits on the Mexican side of the border to enter the United States because of security measures that have only increased since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
