Argentina considers its relationship with India a "priority"

-

Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie told his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj that the relationship between Mauricio Macri's government and Narendra Modi's government constitutes a strategic relationship of the first order.

"Faurie He described it as ""priority" the relationship with India", reported the head of the San Martín Palace after meeting with the Indian foreign minister during the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Within this context, Argentina expects exports to India to increase and diversify, although the trade balance is favorable to the South American country.

In fact, sales to India represent the second largest trade surplus in Asia, behind Vietnam.

The Asian country, in addition, constitutes the sixth destination for Argentine exports, but "The level of economic and trade relations between India and Argentina is far below the potential they could have".

The same thing happens between India and Mercosur, a regional bloc made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The two ministers therefore claimed the need to increase reciprocal trade, and to inaugurate missions that strengthen relations in this regard, especially in relation to the agricultural sector, since India needs equipment that Argentina can provide

Another topic discussed by the foreign ministers was the meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO), an organization of which India is a founding member (in 1995), to be held in Buenos Aires in December.

During the interview, Faurie reminded Swaraj that the Indian Prime Minister had shown Interest in Indian companies entering Vaca Muerta, an area of the province of Neuquén (southwest) rich in unconventional hydrocarbons, where the Government of Mauricio Macri is trying to promote investments.

Finally, the foreign ministers also discussed the G-20, which both countries are members of, given that Argentina will host the summit to be held next year.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri met twice with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both within the framework of the G-20: first in September 2016, in Hangzhou, China, and last July in Hamburg, Germany.
