Argentina and Costa Rica begin electronic certification for plant products

-

Argentina and Costa Rica have initiated electronic phytosanitary certification for the export and import of all their products and by-products of plant origin.

Thus, the Caribbean country joins the use of the Electronic Phytosanitary Certificate (e-Phyto), which the National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) already exchanges with Chile, United States y Sri Lanka for regulated articles of plant origin. The e-Phyto is a tool that facilitates and promotes more transparent, reliable, digital and paperless international trade.

«It is now the fourth country with which Argentina implements the electronic phytosanitary certificate", which arrives at its destination in seconds and eliminates the use of paper in the export and import of plant products that countries exchange," explained Diego Quiroga, National Director of Plant Protection at Senasa.

Development “e-Phyto System” is an initiative of the International Plant Protection Convention  which encourages its implementation by the National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPO) of the contracting countries.

Argentina leads the e-Phyto implementation process worldwidel. In May 2020, the first exchange of paperless electronic certificates was carried out with Chile. “We have already started testing with Paraguay, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, the Netherlands and the European Union,” explained Quiroga, referring to the large number of countries that are on the way to joining this certification modality, which, among other benefits, favors environmental protection by eliminating the use of paper.
