Port and tourism authorities from Argentina, Uruguay and Chile held a meeting on Wednesday (27.2.2019) in Montevideo to plan their participation in the Seatrade Cruise Global 2019, which will take place between April 8 and 11 in Miami. Beach, in the southeastern US state of Florida.
Díaz participated in the meeting together with the Undersecretary of Tourism of Uruguay, Benjamín Liberoff, and the Undersecretary of Tourism of Chile, Mónica Zalaquett. Also attending were Sebastián Montero, executive director of the Corporation of Ports of the Southern Cone, a private entity that brings together Chilean companies in the sector that receive cruise ships, and the Comptroller of the General Administration of Ports of the port of Buenos Aires, Gonzalo Mórtola, details the statement from the Presidency of the eastern country.
“We do not only intend to show unity, but a common strategy to attract cruises as a region and not individually”, said the head of the ANP who highlighted that for the first time the three countries will be neighbors in one of the areas of the main fair of the sector.
The possibility of ports in the participating countries, plus Brazil, presenting themselves to cruise companies as a region was discussed within the framework of the VI Regional Meeting of Cruises and River Nautical Tourism, which took place on October 18 and 19, 2018 and brought together port authorities from the continent, shipowners and tour operators.
Díaz said that, in addition to port aspects, the need to adopt joint actions to attract extra-regional tourism was analyzed. The official said that at the end of the day, the participants signed "a document containing suggestions on how to improve the activity (addressed to the various governments)."
The president of ANP also assured that, after Seatrade, there will be new work opportunities. He said that, in turn, our country and Argentina have the objective of attracting the interest of private investors to develop river cruise activity that navigates the Uruguay River for tourism purposes.
