A new passenger screening system implemented since September 2018 by the National Customs Service and the Agricultural and Livestock Service allowed a 40% reduction in waiting times in the first month and was rated as good or very good by 98% of respondents.
The Undersecretary of Finance, Francisco Moreno, highlighted “that the initial objectives and expectations have been met, with the excellent results that we have obtained through the successful application of these measures. Undoubtedly, it is the travelers who most value that we can provide them with a better service, by making their arrival in Chile more expeditious. This is the line of work that we want to continue promoting, taking measures that show that Chile is a modern and reliable destination for everyone.”
The plan aims to improve the flow of traffic by maintaining effective oversight of the work that SAG and Customs carry out jointly at all of the country's borders, safeguarding the safety of citizens, granting franchises and paying the corresponding duties and taxes.
What is it about?
*Segmentation of the country's entry flows between people who declare or do not declare goods outside the traveler's luggage.
*Establish a green route (they do not declare goods) or a red route (they do declare) to make transit more expeditious..
*It allows for proper inspection and simplifies the process for passengers.
*It is important that users are well informed before arriving in the country. and enter with products by checking on the page www.aduana.cl about the characteristics of the traveler's luggage, and keeping the receipts or proof of purchase in the case of those who enter the country with merchandise to declare.
The Director of the Metropolitan Regional Customs Office, Wildo Arévalo, explained that “the success of this segmentation is also based on the attitude of travelers, who must always be informed in a timely and adequate manner about what they can or cannot bring into the country. In this way, protection is a task for all of us who are involved in these inspection processes, which have, among other objectives, the protection of the country and its integral development.”
Other benefits that have been obtained from this profiling are that only 30% of passengers have to undergo inspection; the use of scanners and officials has been optimized; long queues have been avoided; and passengers have been encouraged to declare correctly.
These actions have taken place in the context of the sustained increase in passenger flow through Chile's main airport terminal, which has remained at an average annual rate of 2010% since 10.
