The Container Control Program course, developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Customs Organization (UNODC-WCO), was successfully completed today (18.03.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) at the National Customs Directorate of Uruguay.

The training activity held in March included the participation of customs and police officers working in port control units established within the framework of the programme.

At the closing ceremony, the Trainer of the UNODC-WCO Global Container Control Programme Regional Office, César Schiaffino, referred to the successful outcome of the activity and especially thanked the United States Embassy and the National Customs Directorate that made this technical training possible in Uruguay.

The expert announced that a Container Control Unit will be installed in the country in the coming months, which will operate at the headquarters of the National Customs Directorate, located in Montevideo.

In turn, the Political Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Sheree Marambio, highlighted the cooperation between state agencies in the pursuit of common objectives. He also expressed his satisfaction with the participation and collaboration with this program that has had such good results for the region.

Meanwhile, National Director of Customs, Jaime Borgiani, highlighted the pride of having completed the program, as well as having had the participation of the officials.

In closing, Borgiani highlighted the efforts that the institution under his charge is making to ensure that Uruguay is seen as a "safe country", in constant efforts to combat all illegal activities.

In this regard, the UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme has a global reach and aims to strengthen the structures and processes that enable the application of sustainable laws for selected States and ports, in order to minimize the exploitation of maritime containers for illicit drug trafficking and other transnational organized crime activities.

This initiative also acts to promote and facilitate cooperation, not only between Latin America and the Caribbean, but also between other regions around the world, through the implementation of global programs.Press release from Uruguay Customs)
