-

The authorities of Panama and Costa Rica approved this Wednesday (27.07.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) the operational regulations of the Bilateral Coordination Committee of the Integrated Control Center between both Central American countries.

This was indicated by the National Customs Administration of Panama in a statement, which adds that the bilateral meeting was held virtually between the CEO, Tayra Barsallo, as well as the Manager of the Border Integration Program of Costa Rica, Gonzalo Elizondo Breedy, both accompanied by their work teams.

The official information clarified that “this Regulation establishes the Competencies and powers of the Bilateral Coordination Committee, in order to propose and resolve the operational aspects of border control between both nations." He added that such regulation also indicates "the mechanisms necessary to make the working procedures of the competent entities compatible".

El area of application of the regulation will be the National Control Center, including the Integrated Control Center Paso Canoes and border crossings Sabalito (Costa Rica)-Rio Sereno (Panama), both under the single-header integrated control model where border control activities will be carried out by duly accredited competent national officials of each country.

Remember that the Customs Logistics Integration Program (PILA) as it is known in Panama, or Border Integration Program (PIF) in Costa Rica is an initiative that both countries are implementing to contribute to the improvement of the logistics sector by modernizing processes, technology, infrastructure and fiscal and parafiscal control equipment at the three border crossings: Paso Canoas, Guabito and Rio Sereno.

Panama and Costa Rica share 378 km of border that extends from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast, in which there are three border posts (figure)

The plan comprises three components: investments in infrastructure and equipment, efficient and effective fiscal and parafiscal control processes, and urban improvement and territorial planning.

According to official sources, this program, whose execution period ends in May 2024 and involves multiple government institutions, will impact society by facilitating and improving the passage of cross-border transport and trade.ANA Press Release)
