Requirements for pilotage services in ports are modified

-

The national government has reduced the requirements for vessels to make use of the mandatory pilotage or piloting service, that is, those professionals who advise the captain on the maneuvers of entering and leaving a port or a canal.

This is established by the decree 188 / 2019 Published this Wednesday (13.3.2019) in the Official Gazette, where it is explained that "the increase in the maximum length of vessels exempt from embarking pilots will result in an improvement in operating costs for the Argentine fleet and will contribute to improving the competitiveness of water transport as a whole."

Thus, the regulations determine that vessels of more than 120 meters in length (long), which were required to have the services of a pilot in their maneuvers of entry and mooring at the ports of Buenos Aires, La Plata and Bahia Blanca, may enter without meeting these requirements if they do not exceed 140 meters in length and have a draft of up to 6,10 meters.

Furthermore, these exceptions are extended to the pilotage service on the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, since "push tugs and push convoys, regardless of their length and flag," are exempt from pilotage..

The legislation is signed by President Mauricio Macri, the Chief of Staff, Marcos Peña, and the Minister of Transport, Guillermo Dietrich.
