Mexico and Paraguay promote AP and Mercosur interaction

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced in a speech in Asunción that his country and Paraguay will promote interaction between the Latin American trade blocs of the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur.

In the multilateral sphere, Paraguay is an important ally of Mexico in encouraging the processes of rapprochement between regional blocs," said the president together with his Paraguayan counterpart Horacio Cartes.

With that vision, both countries will continue "promoting interaction between the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur, whose pro tempore presidency is currently held by Paraguay", announced Peña Nieto in his speech broadcast by the presidency.

The Pacific Alliance, based on free trade, was created in 2011 by Chile, Colombia, Peru and Mexico, while Mercosur has been integrated since 1991 by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay; Venezuela, which joined in 2012, is currently suspended.

"Our countries recognize that the opening of markets is an important driver of development," said the Mexican leader, whose six-year term ends in December of this year.

The two rulers, he continued in his speech, "We agree on objectives and values, such as the defense of democracy and the rule of law (…) we aim towards the consolidation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a united region, at peace, and in which human rights are defended and promoted as a priority."

The Mexican president also stressed his commitment to "avlaunching towards better economic ties in order to boost trade and investment flows."

Regarding bilateral relations, Peña Nieto said that Paraguay stands out in Latin America "for its growth potential and its cultural wealth."

Peña Nieto's official visit to Paraguay is an opportunity to "open new avenues for collaboration and ensure a shared future of well-being and prosperity for our peoples."

The president also said that for him and his counterpart Cartes "it is essential to promote rapprochement between our societies and to expand integration in the educational and cultural spheres."
