APEC 2023 leaders issued the Golden Gate Declaration, creating a resilient and sustainable future for all

The 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting concluded on Friday (17.11.2023) in San Francisco (USA) with the adoption of the Golden Gate Declaration on Creating a resilient and sustainable future for all

"We must harness technological and economic progress to further unleash the enormous potential and tremendous dynamism in our region, stimulate economic growth and address all environmental challenges, including climate change," the statement said.

The document was adopted after a two-day meeting, during which leaders focused on issues of sustainability, climate, fair energy transition, interconnection and building inclusive and resilient economies.

In the text, the leaders reaffirm their determination to offer a free, open, fair, non-discriminatory, transparent, inclusive and predictable trade and investment environment.

They also reaffirm the importance of the rules-based multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization at its core, which continues to catalyze the extraordinary growth of the APEC region.

APEC economies are also committed to enhancing their capacity building and technical cooperation efforts in support of economies’ readiness to participate in comprehensive and high-quality regional initiatives. “We will continue to work to ensure a level playing field to foster a favorable trade and investment environment,” the statement said.

The world continues to face profound challenges posed by the impacts of climate change. Leaders recognize that intensified efforts are needed for economies to accelerate their clean, sustainable, fair, affordable and inclusive energy transitions through diverse pathways, consistent with net-zero global greenhouse gas emissions or carbon neutrality by or around mid-century, taking into account the latest scientific advances and different domestic circumstances.

APEC economies pledge to accelerate the transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles, sustainable aviation fuels, and the decarbonization of low- and zero-emission maritime and port transport, the document said.

The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to creating an enabling, inclusive, open, fair and non-discriminatory digital ecosystem for businesses and consumers.

The leaders’ meeting, held in San Francisco on Thursday and Friday, brought together political and business leaders from all 21 APEC member economies under the theme “Creating a resilient and sustainable future for all.”

The United States thus transferred responsibilities to Peru as the host country of APEC in 2024. (Declaration)
