Latin American airlines transported 95% fewer passengers in July compared to 2019

-

Latin American airlines recorded, in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, a drop in dPassenger transport demand up 95% in July last year compared to the same month last year, a decline just below that recorded in June, which was 96,6%, according to the report released this Tuesday (01.09.2020) by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In turn, the offered capacity fell 92,6% and the occupancy rate fell by 27,1 percentage points to 58,4%, which was nevertheless the highest among all regions.

On a global level, the Passenger demand in July (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) continued at critically low levels as was located at 79,8% below from July 2019 levels.

However, the July figure was somewhat better than the 86,6% year-on-year drop recorded in June, driven mainly by domestic markets, especially in Russia and China, and the reopening of the market in the Schengen area (European Union), which helped boost international demand in that region, against other international markets that showed little change since June.

Offered capacity was 70,1% below 2019 levels, and load factor sank to a record low in July, at 57,9%.

«The demand crisis continued with little respite in July. With essentially four out of five air travelers staying home, The industry remains largely paralyzed", he pointed Alexandre de Juniac, Director General and CEO of IATA, En a release.

He added that "governments that reopen and then close borders or remove and then reimpose quarantines, does not give many consumers confidence to make travel plans, nor to the airlines to reconstruct the schedules."
