SELA, an organization dedicated to promoting collaboration and integration in Latin America and the Caribbean, launched this Thursday (08.10.2020) a platform for the Network of Digital and Collaborative Ports aimed at becoming a meeting and interaction point for the Latin American port industry and international audiences.
The new portal (website and extranet) named “reddepuertos.org"It is a virtual space that Links twenty-eight port systems belonging to thirteen countries in the region, offering a solution to the need for interaction and connection between members of the port industry.
According to the Secretary of SELA, Javier Paulinich, “the Port Network consolidates emblematic work of the institution. It is a clear example of the type of results that can be obtained from the inter-institutional cooperation".
Thus, SELA, with the collaboration of CAF-Development Bank of Latin America, reinforces the strategy aimed at promoting the strengthening of public policies aimed at the port sectorIt also promotes the implementation of technical recommendations at the local level in each port system, with a view to the world's recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The platform promotes integration through a trade facilitation effort with lower regional logistics costs. This is key to boosting global value chains,” stressed Edgar Patiño, president of the Port Authority of Peru (APN) and of the steering committee of the Network of Digital and Collaborative Ports.
The new tool, based on "regionalism", serves 80 percent of Latin America's port cargo, as it has twenty-eight ports in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Trinidad and Tobago.
“It is a website structured on the paradigm of seeking peers with whom to share solutions to common problems,” said Fausto Arroyo, Executive of CAF. He added: “The extranet allows the incorporation of other communities who want to feel part of it.”
“It is time to intensify collaboration to Stimulate intraregional trade which will bring great benefits to Latin America,” Arroyo said.
In a second stage, the SELA Secretariat hopes to continue strengthening the program with the incorporation of new tools and training workshops on technological and information improvements. This will allow the new specialized portal to be more useful, both for members of the Network and for the general public.
