The European Union unveiled its new "Counterfeiting and Piracy Watchlist”, mentioning websites and physical markets outside the bloc. According to the report, the European Union Intellectual Property Office, the European Anti-Fraud Office and Europol have contributed to the preparation of the Watch List.

The mentioned list has four focus areas: websites offering copyrighted content, e-commerce platforms, online pharmacies and physical marketplaces.

The list reports on contributions received during a public consultation (from 19 February to 1 June), in which the European Commission invited all interested parties to share their views. More than 70 responses were received, mostly from brand owners, copyright holders, associations and federations representing right holders and associations fighting against intellectual property infringements.

E-commerce, social media platforms, Internet infrastructure service providers and associations of providers of technological products and services also contributed to the public consultation.

According to the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the OECD, The trade in counterfeit and pirated goods is worth around 460.000 billion euros annually worldwide.
