The break-up of the Argentine Perito Moreno glacier is the largest since 1988, with one of the arms of the lake having exceeded 11,25 metres in height, separated from the rest by the mass of ice, according to sources from the national park where it is located in Patagonia.
As the glacier advances, it encounters a peninsula of land, isolating part of Lake Argentino and beginning to accumulate water until the pressure breaks the ice dam, a cyclical phenomenon that is not related to climate change, according to officials at the Glaciers National Park in the province of Santa Cruz, in the south of the country, on Saturday (10.03.2018).
The previous break, in 2016, occurred when the separated part, the Rico arm, had reached 10,50 metres, a level it had not exceeded since the detachment that occurred in 1988, when it reached 19 metres.
However, experts have recalled that the break-up is a natural phenomenon that cannot be anticipated, at least until the final section of the glacier tongue begins to filter water from the Rico arm, which is followed by the fall of pieces of ice from the lower part and the formation of a bridge that lasts only a few days before collapsing into the Canal de los Témpanos.
National park officials said there was no indication that the force of the water had begun to undermine the natural barrier, which remains "very compact."
Although in the ruptures after 1988 (2004, 2006, 2008,2012, 2016 and 10) the height of the Rico arm was around 32 meters, the records from the beginning of the last century show evidence of landslides when the level was XNUMX meters.
