-

The World Customs Organization (WCO) announced that the digital version of the 2022 edition of the Harmonized System (HS) Nomenclature has been available since November 18 on its website for all users of this international Nomenclature.

The 2022 edition of this global standard for the classification of goods in international trade will enter effective from 1 January 2022, the WCO recalled in a statement.

This classification of goods “is used by more than 200 countries and customs unions, as well as by international organizations such as the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), in addition to the Harmonized System (HS) Convention, which currently has 160 Contracting Parties, making it the most successful WCO instrument to date,” the statement said.

It is also reported that the 2022 edition of the HS Nomenclature includes significant changes with 351 sets of amendments (including some additional amendments), broken down as follows: 77 in the agricultural sector; 58 in the chemical sector; 31 in the wood sector; 21 in the textile sector; 27 in the basic metals sector; 63 in the machinery sector; 22 in the transport sector and 52 additional amendments applying to various other sectors. The 2022 edition of the Nomenclature includes a total of 1,228 positions identified by a 4-digit code and 5,612 subheadings associated with a 6-digit code.

The WCO explained that these changes were made in order to update the Harmonized System Nomenclature, taking into account public health and safety, the protection of society and the fight against terrorism, goods specifically regulated in various conventions, food safety and environmental protection, technological progress, trade structures and the clarification of HS texts.

To view the 2022 edition of the SA Nomenclature you can access the OMA. It is also available for free at WCO Trade Tools, while the printed version of the HS 2022 edition can be purchased at the OMA bookstoresystem. (WCO Press Release)
