Today is Transport Day, in honor of the aviator Jorge Alejandro Newbery, who lost his life in Mendoza on March 1, 1914.
Jorge Newbery was a pioneer of national aviation, as well as a seasoned athlete, public servant, engineer and man linked to science.
He was 38 years old when his plane crashed at the Los Tamarindos airfield, as the current area of El Plumerillo in the district of Las Heras, Mendoza, was known at the time, while he was performing a demonstration prior to crossing the Andes mountain range the following month.
People knew him as the Mr. Courage Because a personal characteristic of Newbery was the absence of fear. His exploits had a popular impact.
He is especially remembered for being the architect and founder of the Argentine Military Aeronautics.
