Argentina makes history: exporting certified deforestation-free beef to Europe for the first time

-

For the first time in its history, Argentina exported deforestation-free beef. The shipment, destined for Germany - the main buyer of Argentine beef in the European Union - "represents a fundamental advance within the framework of the export promotion policies promoted by the National Government, together with the export sector, since it strengthens livestock production with a low environmental footprint, in line with the demands of the main markets in the world," reported Senasa on Wednesday (15.05.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX).

The event is considered a “milestone", the result of joint work between the Secretariat of Bioeconomy, the National Service of Health and Agri-Food Quality (Senasa) and the Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (IPCVA), focusing on consumers and the growing requirements linked to accessing export markets.

It is remembered that the Regulation 1115 / 2023 The European Union's aim is to curb deforestation and forest degradation caused by the expansion of agricultural land to produce certain raw materials such as cattle, among others.

In this regard, "the National Government is working on generating the regulatory framework and public goods necessary for private operators to be able to advance in traceability and certification systems for products, with a view to increasing the value of exports and increasing Argentina's participation in destination markets."

In 2023, Argentina exported 49 thousand tons of beef to the European Union for a total of USD 479 million, being the second export destination behind China, according to official data.
