In an unexpected turn of events, the Government of Argentina has suspended the announced measure that established the end of international roaming for those traveling to MERCOSUR countries. This decision came a few hours after the National Communications Agency (ENACOM) published a statement on its official website today (27.12.2024).
Sources close to ENACOM confirmed to the newspaper Infobae that the measure "will not begin on Sunday (December 29, 2024)" as planned, because "technical coordination with regulators in Uruguay and Paraguay is still pending, and Brazil has not yet ratified the agreement."
While ENACOM did not provide public clarification on the reasons for the suspension. Nor is it possible to reinstate the measure in the short term, the truth is that MERCOSUR users continue to face the additional costs of international roaming.
The decision announced today is the result of an agreement reached between the MERCOSUR Member States - Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay - signed in July 2019 and ratified in our country in May of this year through Law 27740, which approved the Agreement for the Elimination of International Roaming Charges for End Users of MERCOSUR.
It also highlights the need for effective communication management, which can play a key role as a bridge between the administration and citizens, facilitating understanding on key issues.
