ecoTRADE: The European Union and SIECA launch a new phase of cooperation for sustainable trade in Central America.

In one of the important announcements of the month of June in terms of bi-regional cooperation, the European Union (EU) and the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) officially launched the project ecoTRADE – Economic Integration for Sustainable Trade in Central America, an initiative that marks the beginning of a new cycle of joint work.

Funded by the European Union and implemented by SIECA, ecoTRADE aims to strengthen regional competitiveness and maximize the benefits of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union (AACUE). According to official information from SIECA, the project will be developed between 2025 and 2028, and is aligned with the principles of the European Green Deal, integrating sustainability, digitalization and trade facilitation.

During the event held last Thursday, June 26, which brought together representatives of the six Central American countriesThe strategic nature of ecoTRADE was highlighted as a platform for moving toward a more integrated, resilient, and modern region.

The initiative is articulated around four pillars: trade facilitation and regional competitiveness; strengthening the Association Agreement with the European Union; promoting the 2035 Mobility and Logistics Master Plan; and strengthening regional economic integration. According to authorities, the project also promotes digitalization, e-commerce, and the implementation of measures in line with the European Green Deal.

With the launch of ecoTRADE, the European Union and SIECA are beginning a new cycle of cooperation that seeks to consolidate Central America as an integrated, competitive, and sustainable region, prepared to face the challenges of 21st-century global trade.

El Secretary General of SIECA, Francisco A. Lima Mena, highlighted that ecoTRADE is a unique opportunity to strengthen trade and turn Central America into a strategic logistics hub. Felice Zaccheo, European Commission, reaffirmed its commitment to trade facilitation, digitalization, and sustainable development in the region.
