World Maritime Day: Maritime transport towards a sustainable future

-

Under the motto for a "Sustainable maritime transport for a sustainable planet", is celebrated today virtual way World Maritime Day with the challenge of promoting care for the planet's environment.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) advance a strategy to achieve this goal.

It is noted that the IMO has adopted and will continue to develop measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the sulphur content of ships' fuel and implement the convention on ballast water management.

It also remains committed to protecting polar regions, reducing marine litter and improving the efficiency of maritime transport through the electronic exchange of information.

Another guideline to follow will be to face the challenges of digitalisation of maritime transport and improve the participation of women in the maritime community.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put the professionalism of the two million seafarers serving in the merchant fleet around the world to the test.

Maritime transport also continues to account for more than 80 percent of global trade, including medical supplies, food and other vital products, which are key in the response to the disease caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV2.

The IMO regrets that thousands of seafarers are facing a humanitarian crisis as they are stranded at sea, unable to leave their ships, which have contracts extended for several months.

The Organization request to all governments to consider raising the issue of seafarers and the crew change crisis.

The IMO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes cooperation between States and the transport industry to improve the safety and security of navigation and to prevent marine pollution from ships.
