Brazilian tax revenues reached 110.855 billion reais (US$29.640 billion) in June, an increase of 2,01% compared to the same month last year and the best result for the month since 2015, the Federal Revenue Service reported on Tuesday (24.7.2018).
According to the Ministry of Finance, last month was the eighth consecutive month of real growth in federal revenues compared to the same period last year.
In the accumulated total of the first six months of the year, the collection amounted to 714.255 billion reales (US $ 190.977 million), A real growth of 6,88% compared to the same period last year and the best result for the period since 2015.
Impact of the strike
According to Claudemir Malaquías, head of the tax and customs studies center at the Federal Revenue Service, tax collection was affected by the truckers' strike that paralyzed Brazilian economic activity for 11 days at the end of May.
He explained that the collection was affected by a one-month delay, so the halt that occurred in May was only felt in the June balance sheet.
The truckers' strike mainly impacted the collection of the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI), a tax linked to industrial activity, which fell 14,3% compared to June 2017, according to the Federal Revenue Service.
Malaquías said that some of the effects of the truckers' strike will still be felt in other months of the year.
Collection: Important?
The behavior of the collection is important because it helps the government to try meet the fiscal target, that is, the result for the public accounts, which for 2018 is a maximum deficit of 159.000 billion reais (US$42.513 billion).
