The National Service for Food Safety and Quality (Senasa) has updated and simplified the procedures for controlling food waste and other waste of organic origin – animal and vegetable – generated by the international transport of tourists arriving in Argentina.

La Senasa Resolution No. 92/2018, published on Friday (02.03.2018) in the Official Gazette, redefines the concept of regulated waste These are understood to mean: “waste from products, by-products and derivatives of plant or animal origin resulting from production, consumption and marketing cycles” and include “kitchen waste from international means of transport, food waste from restaurants, catering services, kitchens and other services provided on board by international transport companies” as well as waste originating from “health checks on travellers, their luggage and accompanied means from outside” the country.

So far all Waste from tourist transports arriving in Argentina had to be treated to prevent the spread of pests and diseases that could affect the animal and plant health of our country.

As of the new standard, the treatment only applies to organic products of animal and plant origin, which It also implies a reduction in costs for companies by reducing the volume of waste. who should receive treatment.

Before it was issued, the regulation was subject to public consultation on the Senasa website and its final draft took into consideration the contributions made during that period by entities and individuals.

The Resolution also simplifies the operation in the control of waste generated on board passenger cruise ships arriving in Argentina, and improves the coordination with other competent official bodies, such as the Argentine Naval Prefecture, without ceasing to maintain the sanitary guarantees that prevent the entry of diseases or pests through this waste.

To this end, it establishes that the inspection and authorization to discharge waste are carried out under the guidelines and recommendations of the Argentine Naval Prefecture, in compliance with international agreements.
