US Consulate suspends services in Sao Paulo

-

The U.S. Consulate in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo suspended its services on Tuesday (6.03.2017) due to the protest organized by the Fuerza Sindical against the announcement by that country to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum.

The union demonstration took place shortly before noon in front of the US Consulate, located in the southern part of the city.

Police have set up a cordon to prevent people from entering the site, so visa procedures have been suspended until Tuesday.

The Trade Union Force claims that the measure announced by the US President, Donald Trump, to tax imported steel and aluminum, aims to protect producers in the northern country.

For the union, the measure on Brazilian exports will affect production and, consequently, job creation in Brazil.

On Friday, following President Trump's announcement on the issue, the Brazil's National Confederation of Industry (CNI) said the surcharge will cause severe losses to the country's companies, and called on the government of Brazilian President Michel Temer to use "all available means" against the measure.

The CNI estimated losses of $3.000 billion in Brazilian iron and steel exports, and $144 million in aluminum exports.

The entity proposes that the Brazilian government appeal to the dispute settlement system of the World Trade Organization (WTO), because "in case of victory, it would give us the right to retaliate."
