AFIP refunds VAT to foreign tourists

The Federal Public Revenue Administration (AFIP) will refund the Value Added Tax (VAT) to the foreign tourists that hire hotel or other type of accommodation and be paid with credit or debit cards issued abroad. The organization announced this on Thursday (29.12.2016) in a statement.

The amount to be refunded will be calculated based on the nightly rate., including breakfast. The Refund will be automatic and direct, that is, it will be displayed on the invoice and does not require additional procedures and is available to foreigners who purchase these services.

For foreigners to access this benefit, accommodations must be registered taxpayers.

The measure will be established through a General Resolution signed jointly by the federal administrator of Public Revenues, Alberto Abad, and the Minister of Tourism, Gustavo Santos.

The regulations will be published tomorrow in the Official Gazette and will have effective from 1 January 2017.
