Customs and postal services strengthen cooperation

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Universal Postal Union (UPU) have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at deeper collaboration to work on new opportunities in e-commerce and network security.

 “We look forward to further promoting post-customs cooperation in the digital age, so that we can contribute to the well-being of people, not only by protecting them but also by supporting consumers and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) that increasingly rely on small deliveries,” said the WCO Secretary-General.

 “The ongoing digital transformation, e-commerce and global economic development mean many new challenges and opportunities for both organizations,” said UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki.

The new Cooperation Agreement - which replaces the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) originally signed by the WCO and the UPU in 1994 and amended in 2007 - will allow for closer work on a range of cross-cutting issues, including digitalisation and data sharing, security, regulatory requirements and trade facilitation, the statement said.

The two organizations also agreed to organize the First Joint WCO-UPU Global Conference en 2023This conference will bring together both Customs administrations and designated postal operators to promote cooperation at national level in the joint search for better solutions in the future.
