As part of efforts to combat illicit trade, top representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Uruguay Customs held a meeting last Saturday (20.03.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX).
The virtual meeting was held with the aim of Advance the implementation of the Global Container Control Program in the Port of Montevideo, reported the Ministry of Economy.
UNODC and the World Customs Organization (WCO) established this Programme with the purpose of assisting governments in creating effective container controls and strengthening structures and processes that enable the application of sustainable laws for selected States and ports. The objective of the Program is to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling..
“At the meeting, The National Customs Directorate of Uruguay expressed its deep commitment "We will continue to work together, as well as coordinate meetings with the different authorities and technicians of the organizations that join forces and act within the Port of Montevideo, to implement this important Program that would be a milestone for Uruguay," the statement said.
“Its objectives include: the establishment of Container Profiling Units to identify high-risk containers, promote cooperation between competent national authorities and assist governments in the effective establishment of controls over containerized cargo,” the official information detailed.
For Uruguay Customs, the Global Container Control Program will allow monitoring the progress made in customs services, improve import and export control techniques, as well as the identification and examination of high-risk containers in transit, to continue the consolidation of secure logistics chains.
This program is in force in several countries in the region: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, among others.
