Uruguay and Brazil inaugurate binational airport in Rivera

With the presence of the President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, and authorities of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the binational airport of Rivera, on the border between both countries, was inaugurated on Monday (11.12.2023).

According to the Uruguayan government, the binational nature of this airport allows both Uruguay and Brazil to use it as a destination for domestic flights, strengthening the connection between both nations. 

Bilateral cooperation

Rivera airport responds to the commitment made by Lacalle Pou and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in January 2023, in Montevideo.

During the ceremony, the Uruguayan president expressed his gratitude to his Brazilian counterpart for the achievement of “This transcendental work". He indicated the three reasons What makes it special: the decision of a government to promote a national airport system in six national air terminals; taking advantage of the coincidences between governments and seeking solutions for an airport that was facing physical and bureaucratic problems.

"There was listening, political decision and trust in the word given," said the Uruguayan president.

Furthermore, he highlighted the future works over the Yaguarón River, the Barón de Mauá bridge and the Merín lagoon waterway.

Also participating were the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado; the Ministers of National Defense, Javier García; of Foreign Affairs, Omar Paganini; of Transport and Public Works, José Luis Falero; of Industry, Energy and Mining, Elisa Facio; of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, and of Tourism, Tabaré Viera, among other authorities of the Executive Branch.

Also present were the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira; the Brazilian Minister of Social Communication, Paulo Pimenta; his counterpart from Ports and Airports of Brazil, Silvio Costa Filho; the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite; the Director of Corporación América Airports in Uruguay, Diego Arrosa, and the Mayor of Rivera, Richard Sander.

The investment to modernize and expand the Rivera airport (500 kilometers north of Montevideo) involved an investment of 13 million dollars from the private consortium Corporación América, part of Corporación América Airports.
